The Boxes

The story so far – box building, site location

Since the group started we have built 20 boxes of varying shapes and sizes to be put up in trees or on telegraph poles to encourage Barn owls to nest. 8boxes have been erected to date in the Tameside and Oldham area and we hope to put more up over the next few years once further suitable sites have been found. The idea is to create a corridor of suitable nest sites, close to feeding ground for the owls, along the Pennine edge to link up with known populations of Barn Owl.

At present we have around 20 active members involved in various aspects of the group.

The finished product

This is the finished product. The box is not easily visible unless you know where to find it.

At the moment we have only erected the A-Frame boxes and although we have built all the pole boxes. At the moment we still need to find a number of sites for the pole boxes and we also need to hire the equipment necessary to install them. We are researching into auger prices and a reliable way to put the poles into the ground.

We were given, very generously, a number of poles from United Utilities. These are still in storage at the moment until we can find good enough sites to put them up.
